Nahla - Feb 2024

"Nahla is an extremely special dog, not only because she’s smart, curious, courageous and silly, but also because she never quits.

“Whether it’s her relentless pursuit when playing ‘find my toy,’ endless energy in a tug battle, or her unwillingness to believe she can’t fit on the same sofa with you, Nahla has inspired us through her actions and love.

“She is astonishingly sweet to all living things (except squirrels) and has a contagious, confident energy making others comfortable. She lives for her people and spending every minute with them. Because of this, she is so trainable, up for any adventure, and enjoys exploring the city. Nahla is adored by her loving family, dog brother Bubs, and cat sister Pip.

“In June 2023, just shy of her third birthday, Nahla chased a high, bouncing ball into the roots of a very large tree. The injury to her leg was evident immediately and fractured in a spiral into her elbow. The leg broke so badly we were prepped for potential nerve damage that could lead to amputation.

“After an 8-hour procedure, the surgeons decided they weren’t sure if her leg would function; however, they placed a spica splint on and gave her a chance.

“After five weeks in the splint, we were given another few weeks to see if the leg could function. We were amazed by her willingness to commit to her recovery, taking it one step at a time and proving to surgeons she should keep the leg and begin PT.

“We are thankful for the vets and surgeons at VEG, VSC, MetroVet and IPC for helping us through this process. Nahla’s time at IPC has proved vital to her recovery. When we first began PT, we weren’t sure how much we could achieve. We knew that Nahla would fight, and with the help of the therapists, she improved dramatically.

“She regained some strength, balance and muscle growth—to the point where we questioned if she somehow tugged harder. Per the therapists, Nahla’s favorite activity in life may be the underwater treadmill, which has contributed to us getting back to our normal activity level. The injury will hamper her as she ages, but IPC has been critical to helping her maintain her function.”
