June 2020 – Milton

6 months ago · · Comments Off on June 2020 – Milton · Chicago, Chicago's Patient of the Month, Patient of the Month, Uncategorized ·, , ,

On June 21st, 2018, Milton arrived at Chicago Animal Care and Control as a euthanasia request – the same day his future mama moved to Chicago. His life didn’t end that day because CRISP Chicago was there and Milton was instead surrendered to a rescue. Soon after, ALIVE Rescue scooped him up as a foster dog and started to get him the medical care he desperately needed.

Milton was a mess of infections, pain, and anxiety. He didn’t have full use of his back legs, and he cried all the time. He was mostly blind and deaf, and completely toothless; however, that did not stop his foster parents who adopted Milton on October 7, 2018.

Of course, he was the exact dog we wanted to foster. We’re suckers for special needs animals and impossible cases, which is how he ended up in our family.

…The first time I saw a dog beneath all that anxiety was the day he let me rub his face with a blanket. He leaned into that touch. That was it for me – I was all in, ready to do all I could to help this little guy find his way back to health and happiness.

Milton quickly became a regular at the vet, who saved his life more than once, as they began to untangle his complicated medical mysteries and eventually removed both of his eyes in an emergency surgery.

Milton has been at Integrative Pet Care since September of last year. Dr. Kelli Martin and his therapist, Emma have been his regular care team to work on his comfort and mobility. After just a few appointments, Milton went from anxious and uncomfortable, to snoozing and relaxed during every appointment.

When we first met Milton, he was full of tiny, grumpy complaints about my exam because he wanted to move all around the room instead. I could tell that he had a huge personality; that was obvious from the video of him running down the sidewalk, trusting his owners implicitly to steer him clear of trouble. He came in because he had trouble settling at night and I was, honestly, a little worried that he wouldn’t like any therapies that required him to stay still. Within a very short time, he was sleeping through his acupuncture, laser, and massage about 95% of the time! He is all about self-care, these days, and will sometimes wake up to do some exercise with his beloved Emma. His owners and I feel as if rehabilitation helps him to maintain a high quality of life. He is the biggest joy in the smallest package. We love Milton!

Milton is definitely a favorite at IPC and is loved by so many. It is only fitting that Milton is our June patient of the month since he is celebrating his 15th birthday on June 21st. Happy early birthday, Milton!

What can I say about Milton? He is a really special guy with a bundle of personality! You never really know what Milton you’re going to get each session. Most days he knows how to really sink in to his therapies and falls asleep during his massage and laser sessions. Other days, he really wants to move around and be active. His appointments are always fun and interesting because you have to go with whatever he wants to go with that day.

We love Milton here at IPC! He should win an award for most relaxed during his therapy sessions. We always set up a Milton station for his acupuncture appointments, which usually includes a cozy bed and full body blanket burrito wrap. It seems to be his happy place.

…it’s funny because some days he is so relaxed and other days, he wants to be so active and run around. He may be small, but don’t be fooled by his powerful bark. It spooks us every single time!

Each month we ask our POTM to select an organization for us to feature. This month, Milton’s mom asked us to feature ALIVE Rescue of Chicago, where Milton was placed in foster care. Please learn more about them at the link below:
