Dexter joined the Aufrecht family as a puppy about 8 years ago after their previous dog, another Golden Retriever named Spencer, passed away. He is a sweet and fun dog that can be a little shy and timid sometimes, but that is what his family loves about him.
We knew we had to fill the void in our heart. We looked at several Golden Retriever’s, but Dexter’s sad eyes drew us in. From the moment we picked him up, we couldn’t put him back down.Susie, Dexter’s Owner
Some of Dexter’s favorite activities include chasing tennis balls and running around with his human siblings. A fun fact about Dexter that makes him pretty unique is that he is allergic to latex, which is not as commonly seen in dogs as it is seen in humans. Dexter has a little bit of a temper when it comes to certain dogs and people. He suffers from anxiety and can be very protective of his home and family. After hearing this, it came to quite a shock to the team at Integrative Pet Care when he came in and was the most affectionate and cuddly dog.
I had worked with the owner’s previous dog, Spencer, in the past, so I wasn’t too sure what to expect from Dexter. He started off so shy, but after a few sessions he was like a brand new dog. All can say is that he loves to cuddle and can’t wait to get to work. He’ll drag me down the hall because he is so excited to see everyone and get started. He is so fun to work with!Doris, Dexter’s Therapist
Dexter started his journey at IPC after his owner noticed him limping occasionally when he walked, usually after he has been laying down . His owner did not want to have to limit him with all the physical things he loves to do, so they took him to the vet where they suspected arthritis might be causing the limping. After about a year of on and off again limping, his vet recommended physical therapy to help with his lameness and discomfort. Luckily for Dexter, his owner knew just the place to go: IPC!
“Dexter is the happiest, sweetest, most snuggly boy in the world! He was so shy when he first came to IPC, he would cower in the corner behind the chair with his head almost touching the ground in effort to hide from us. It sure didn’t take him long to come out of his shell and decide that we were his best friends! We quickly discovered that his favorite treat of choice is attention rather than food. He is often sprawled out in someone’s lap or jumping from person to person to get maximum attention. We love Dexter!”Dr. Martin, Veterinarian at IPC
His owners had been a client at IPC before with their previous dog, Spencer. They were thrilled to be back and said it felt like a home-coming. After his initial consult, he was diagnosed with mild lameness, arthritis, and crepitus, as well as, overall muscle tension and some muscle atrophy mostly present in his shoulders. To help with all these things, he comes to IPC once a week for a combination of therapeutic exercise, massage therapy, laser therapy, hydrotherapy, and acupuncture, and he loves coming every week.
Dexter loves visiting his Integrative friends every week and his therapy has paid off. Dexter’s limping used to be a daily occurrence and now we rarely see it. Dexter is able to enjoy the activities he loves pain-free, thanks to the therapy he receives!Susie, Dexter’s Owner
Dexter has been coming to IPC since January of 2020 and we have seen a huge improvement in his lameness and muscle tension. His family says they rarely see him limping anymore and plan to continue with his therapy program to ensure his lameness and discomfort stays away. The team at IPC love Dexter’s goofy and cuddly personality and are always thrilled to see him every week!
I love working with Dexter during his appointments. All he wants is to be as close to you as possible and most of the time will actually sit on top of you. I am convinced he thinks he is about the size of a Yorkie and can sit in your lap at all times. Of course we don’t mind though. The more snuggles the merrier!Katie, Therapy Assistant
Each month we ask our POTM to select an organization for us to feature. This month, Dexter’s owner asked us to feature Rex’s Place in Evanston, a doggie daycare where Dexter visits multiple times a week. This organization has been very accommodating with Dexter’s latex allergy and ensuring he didn’t come in contact with any rubber objects while he was there.
