Patient of the Month March 2017 Chicago

We first met Abbey in July 2016 when she originally came in for hind limb lameness.  Her limp quickly worsened, so her parents found themselves not only seeing her primary care veterinarian, but a neurologist and IPC as well.  After evaluating Abbey, Dr. Ridley sent her back to the neurologist where a hemilaminectomy (spinal IMG_2976surgery) was performed.  Unfortunately she developed pneumonia which made her road to recovery much harder.

Abbey returned to IPC in September after her other health issues cleared up.  She was unable to walk or even stand on her own, making her prognosis unclear.  Dr. Megan Ridley, DVM, CCRT, CVA, CVMST prescribed a rehabilitation program that included thrice weekly visits for underwater treadmill and therapeutic exercise along with massage home visits.

Abbey’s progress was slow in the beginning, but her therapist Laura Krill, CCRP and her dads Brian and Keith never gave up.  She was starting to stand on her own, so a cart from Eddie’s Wheels was recommended which gave her mobility and independence.  Near Christmas, Abbey gave everyone the best gift, she took a few steps on her own!  Her progress didn’t stop there; she was able to walk longer in the underwater treadmill without fatiguing and even started walking over cavalettis.

“I cannot even begin to express the many ways that Integrative Pet Care has helped our little girl.  Put it this way.  When she first came to IPC she could not walk and we did not know if she ever would.  And look at her now!  What the staff of IPC has done for Abbey is nothing short of remarkable!”  –Brian, Abbey’s dad

Now Abbey not only walks in our front door, but runs over to Laura when it’s her turn to work out.   “Abbey and her parents, Brian and Keith, are proof positive that hard work and determination really do pay off! It makes my day to see her standing and walking to me, when I come to greet her for her session. I look forward to challenging her and continuing to see her improve” remarks Laura.

“When Abbey first came to IPC she was not able to walk and was…let’s say portly.  We are happy to say that she is now walking and svelte!  Thanks to Abbey’s dads’ dedication and Abbey’s tenacity she is one of IPC’s favorite success stories.” -Dr. Megan Ridley

Make a difference!

Each month we ask our POTM to choose an animal related organization to spotlight during his or her “reiglogon”.  Abbey has asked us to tell you about Heifer International.

We empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity – but our approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market.
