Maverick is the quintessential story of a country dog living in a big city as he moved from rural Virginia to Chicago 6 years ago. He spent his days wandering around and all was well until he was found lying in a ditch with with exposed bone beneath his left knee. No one knew exactly what happened, but he was taken to the vet where an amputation was performed. As if that weren’t enough he was later attacked by other dogs which damaged his rear end. Back he went to the vet to get patched up, but after pulling out his stitches a few times his owner had enough and wanted to euthanize him. Maverick’s future aunt worked at the animal hospital and persuaded his owner to relinquish him. She called her sister in law Laura, who was visiting soon, to se
e if she was interested in getting a dog. All it took was Maverick resting his head on Laura’s foot for her to know he was their dog.
In late 2015 Laura and Joel noticed that Maverick was having trouble going up the stairs and just slowing down overall. His vet recommended therapy at Integrative Pet Care, so they made an evaluation in February 2016 where they met with Dr. Deanne Zenoni & Laura Krill. Maverick was prescribed an 8 week program that consisted of twice weekly exercise/massage/laser treatments & acupuncture sessions to help with pain management. Overtime, underwater treadmill was added for strengthening.
“IPC has, I think, given Maverick a better quality of life the last year with the combination of supplements, meds and therapies.” -Laura, Maverick’s mom
A cart was recently suggested for Maverick since he was fatiguing quickly during walks. No one was quite sure how Maverick would do in a cart, but his parents crossed their fingers and went for it anyway. Well Maverick sure showed us after he immediately took off in his cart! The gym was full of loud cheers and some tears were even shed.
“I can remember Maverick’s very first appointment and he wasn’t too thrilled to be here. I suggested that his mom bring chicken to the next appointment and we saw a completely different Mav! Working with him always brings a smile to my face, and he makes me proud at each of his accomplishments!” -Laura Krill, Maverick’s therapist
Laura sees Maverick’s therapy as not only physical, but mental as well. “I really think the social aspect of coming to IPC has been great for our entire family; Maverick no longer goes for the front door when Laura or Francisco comes to get him. For me much of it has been the emotional support of the staff as Joel and I cope with Maverick’s aging and abilities. Every staff member is kind, knows us, knows Maverick and wants the best for him. And for me it is cool to see other dogs who come in make progress.”
“Maverick came to us a year ago this month for mobility concerns. Since then he has lost 12 lbs, gotten a new set of wheels and become a prince among men. He has realized his true calling is to be waited on, pampered and spoiled rotten. We look forward to his visits every week!” -Dr. Zenoni
